Dear Fifth Grade Class,

Our 2014-2015 school year starts tomorrow, July 29th. I am so excited for the new school year to begin! Please be patient with a new change coming. I will no longer be using this webpage to post, but a new website supported by Irvine Unified. I will be explaining it all on Back to School Night, August 7th. Please access my new website from this URL:

Mustang Milers

11/24/2013

Our Mustang Milers Running Club is filling up quickly and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage your child to participate.  Mustang Milers is a wonderful program that promotes a healthy lifestyle, leadership skills, and confidence building.  Our upper grade students are the role models for our primary students and they always enjoy the fun had stretching to the music, running relays, and then running their mile around Woodbury.  The program always fills to its 350 capacity.  So again, I encourage you to visit MustangMilers.com and learn more about the program.  You won’t be disappointed.  Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

In an effort to continuously open lines of communication between home and school, all Room 25 parents are encouraged to take an online survey regarding their child’s fifth grade year thus far. This brief survey will only take 5-10 minutes or less. It will give you an opportunity to communicate your thoughts on your child’s year thus far. Your participation is greatly appreciated!

Back by popular demand is Woodbury’s Annual Fall Fun Day. Fall Fun Day is scheduled on Thursday, October 31st. We will allow the children to come to school dressed in a costume and we will have a parade in the morning beginning at 8:00 am. Participation in dressing up is completely optional. Below are the costume guidelines:

  • Children come to school dressed in their costume. We will not allow costume changes to take place at school.
  • Children should wear a costume that can be comfortably worn throughout the entire day.
  • Be sure to have your children wear proper clothes and underclothes underneath their costume just in case they find their costume to be too hot or uncomfortable and wish to take it off before the day is over.
  • Children may not wear masks to school.
  • Children may not wear make-up to school. (For example, no full face make up, no dripping blood, no make-up on hands that will smear on papers.)
  • Children should not bring any object that they will need to hold in their hands. Of special emphasis is our State Education Code that states children may not bring any toy weapons to school of any sort at any time.
  • Children should not come in costumes that depict any kind of graphic violence.
  • Children should be discouraged from wearing any costume material that could be easily damaged.

This Thursday, your child will receive our first book order magazine in their Weekly Conduit. About once a month, I will be sending home book order magazines from Scholastic’s Reading Clubs. Reading Clubs are a great way to build a high-quality home library that is both interesting and relevant to students. While I highly recommend ordering from these catalogs, participation is completely optional.

                                               Class Activation Code: M9M3J

How to Place a Book Order:

All book orders are placed online through a fast, easy, and secure process. I am not accepting checks or cash brought into school, so please use the information below to access the Scholastic Reading Clubs website.

Instructions:

Go to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs and log in using your user name and password.

If it’s your first time ordering online, use the Class Activation Code: M9M3J to get started

1)   SIGN UP at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. On the parent page, click the “Register” button in the “First Time Here?” section. Register for your own user name and password. When prompted, enter the one-time Class Activation Code shown above. This code ensures that your order is sent to me.

2)   SELECT the books you’d like to order—choose from thousands of titles—many more than in our monthly flyers.

3)   SEND your order to me online by the due date and your child’s books will be delivered directly to my classroom.

**Submit your order online by the 25th of every month. I will submit any pending orders at the end of each month. Books will always be delivered directly to our classroom.

Our whole class benefits thanks to the free books we can earn with every online order. Thank you and happy reading!

Ordering online is fast and easy!

REMEMBER:

Use the levels on the catalog to help find appropriate books for your child.

RL: is grade level equivalent.  Our class is full with solid 4th, 5th, and even 6th grade readers!  So look for books with 4.1-6.0 or higher.

LEX: Lexile Framework.  600 or above for our fantastic readers!

Dear 5th Grade Students and Parents,

First a congratulations to students on finishing their first successful week of 5th grade!  It has been so much fun getting to know your students by our daily interactions and the note to my teacher assignment.  I am excited about all the great learning we will be doing.

I also wanted to let you know that today we signed up our class for Edmodo- our virtual classroom where students will be able to check homework, projects, and tests, and communicate with peers about educational topics. We discussed Edmodo etiquette and what is appropriate to post. Our daily homework, as well as any special resources will be posted daily.  I encourage you all to visit it regularly. You can e-mail me privately and ask for your parent code to sign up.  I will talk more about this at BTSN.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new school year at Woodbury!  I would like to take this opportunity to welcome both you and your child to Fifth Grade.  I look forward to working with your child to encourage the development of new talents, skills, and abilities this year.  I can’t wait to see how much your child will grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

For those of you who do not know me, I joined the Woodbury family this year.  I attended Vanguard University for my teaching credential and Master’s degree.  I have been working with children for over 8 years in various academic endeavors.  Most recently, I was a long-term substitute teacher on assignment in fifth grade last year here at Woodbury.  I have been fortunate to work with many different age groups, and I am thrilled to be working with fifth grade students again this year.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you at Back to School Night on Thursday, August 8th.  I hope you will be able to attend this important event to learn about our policies, communication practices, and curriculum.  Parent Conferences will be held August 26th—30th.  Please check the school’s website at www.iusd.org/wo and the school newsletters for continued calendar updates.

Please remember to note our student dismissal times.  In upper grade, our regular dismissal time is 2:32pm.  On Wednesdays and Minimum Days, students will be dismissed at 1:17pm.

Please take the time to fill out the attached forms (my homework plan and permission slip), and have your child return them to me as soon as possible.  Also, please complete the “Parent Communication Form” on my classroom website here.

In addition, please keep in mind that given the number of students we have in the class, I will need your help and support.  I hope that some of you will be able to volunteer in our classroom or from your home.  I will be discussing this further at Back to School Night, and I thank you in advance for your willingness to assist me.

If you have any questions or concerns before Back to School Night, please do not hesitate to contact me directly via e-mail [email protected].  I look forward to meeting you soon!

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Sarah Dalton
